3 Questions All Business Owners Must Ask Themselves

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The first few years after opening a business (big or small) are filled with lots of hard work, determination and optimism. This time period is what I like to call the honeymoon phase – a time where those business owners who are successful, completely immerse themselves in their new business.

At first their success makes it easy to feel energized and focused on working on the business. But inevitably the honeymoon phase eventually comes to an end and many business owners find themselves “stuck” or struggling to find the proper work life balance. I can’t tell you how many times I have talked with new clients who find themselves in a never ending struggle to balance having a successful business with having a successful life. It’s a balancing act that most of us have failed at, at one point or another, leaving us disillusioned and frustrated with the business.

So what can you do when you find yourself feeling stuck in your business? Here are three questions that I often ask clients when they are struggling to balance their work life balance.

1. What are the professional and personal reasons you started the business in the first place?

The life of a business owner is a hectic one. Owners can find themself being pulled in a hundred different directions and wearing a dozen different hats at one time. With everything happening, it’s easy to forget about why you started the business in the first place. Listing your personal and professional reasons for starting the business is a great way to refocus and start building a plan.

2. What aspects of your business are you currently struggling/frustrated with?

This is an easy one. Write down a list of everything that you are struggling with or that frustrates you about your business. Once you see physically (on paper) all of the things that frustrate you, you can begin corrective measures to remedy the issues and alleviate your stress.

3. What are you doing to own your business for real?

This question may sound strange but it’s really simple. What are you doing to own your business instead of allowing your business to own you? Do you have a plan of action? Are you empowering your employees? The goal for every business owner should be…to be a business owner and not just an employee. Understanding this and creating a plan of action to make the proper changes is a huge step in improving your work life balance.
